Senate President Kathleen Passidomo makes committee appointments

Florida Senate President Kathleen Passidomo released her committee appointments December 5 for the 2022-2023 Legislative Session.
Passidomo, a Naples attorney, appointed Sen. Clay Yarborough chair of the Judiciary Committee and named Sen. Colleen Burton as vice chair. Sen. Jennifer Bradley will chair the Appropriations Committee on Criminal and Civil Justice and Sen Bobby Powell will serve as vice chair. Sen. Jonathan Martin will chair the Criminal Justice Committee, with Sen. Jennifer Bradley serving as vice chair.
Passidomo also decided to create both a Committee on Pre-K-12 Education and a Committee on Postsecondary Education.
“Serving as chair of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Pre-K-12 Education, I saw the benefit of bifurcating the responsibilities for Pre-K-12 and Postsecondary,” she said. “In my view, the merits of this approach will be even more impactful by bifurcating the policy committee, rather than the appropriations committee.”
Traveling the state this summer, Passidomo said the pandemic highlighted issues related to education like never before. From increasing school choice options to setting standards for curriculum, parents are demanding more involvement in elementary and high school education, she said.
“Meanwhile, higher education institutions are adapting to the demands of a post-pandemic workforce,” Passidomo said. “I see tremendous room for innovation in this area of public policy and believe the Senate will benefit greatly from separate policy committees for Pre-K-12 and Postsecondary Education.”
