Thinking of selling your practice? Free seminar addresses what you need to know

Ethical and practical concerns for a salable law firm asset

The Senior Lawyers Committee will present “More Stuff I Didn’t Learn in Law School: Ethical and Practical Concerns for a Salable Law Firm Asset” June 28 at the Bar’s Annual Convention in Boca Raton.

Ed AlexanderThe seminar, presented by Ed Alexander of Orlando, is free for all Florida Bar members, but space is limited.

Alexander will explain how solo and small-firm lawyers can start positioning themselves to get the maximum value from the sale of their firms 5-7 years before they plan to leave. Topics will include the types and motivations of law firm buyers, the value drivers for businesses and law firms, The Florida Bar rules and ethical constraints that apply to a sale, and ways to ensure your firm is salable.

“Too many lawyers lock the door and walk away when they are ready to retire,” Alexander said. “They should be starting to think of their practice as a salable asset well before then.”

Senior Lawyers Committee Chair Susan Healy said the seminar isn’t just for senior lawyers.

“Anyone who wants the option of an early retirement should plan to attend,” Healy said.

Alexander said it’s never too early to start planning, since waiting too long can lead to lost value.

“The best way to make your law firm unsalable is to let yourself get burnt out, start referring out clients, and slowing down,” he said.

The program has been approved for 1.0 hour of General CLE credit and 0.5 hours of Ethics credit. The seminar is set for June 28 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Boca Raton Resort & Club in the Venetian I/II conference rooms or attend virtually via Zoom Video.
