The G. Kirk Haas Humanitarian Scholarship for the 2024-2025 academic year has been awarded to Wyatt English, a second-year student at the University of Florida Levin College of Law. This scholarship, part of a prestigious tradition, recognizes students who exemplify exceptional integrity, ethics, professionalism, and concern for others.

Immediate past Florida Bar President Scott Westheimer presented the G. Kirk Haas Humanitarian Award to John C. Patterson, Jr., in June for his outstanding meritorious service to the legal profession. As part of this honor, Patterson selected the University of Florida Levin College of Law to award the scholarship, highlighting a student who mirrors his dedication to the legal field.

“Wyatt is a second-year law student, president of the Student Bar Association, and has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, leadership, and service,” said Merritt E. McAlister, interim dean of the UF College of Law. “He has shown an ability to balance his academic, extracurricular, and professional obligations, while maintaining a high level of integrity and compassion. He is a role model for his peers and a credit to the University of Florida Levin College of Law.”

McAlister expressed pride in recognizing English’s achievements with the G. Kirk Haas Humanitarian Scholarship and confidence that he will “continue to excel in his legal education and career and make a positive impact on society.”

Patterson has served as the president of FFLA, is a former member of the Board of Governors, the Pro Bono Legal Services Committee, the Leadership Academy Committee, the Bar’s Investment Committee, and Certification Plan Appeals Committee.

“This award recognizes his exemplary service and significant impact through his dedicated service to his local community, especially in underserved areas, as well as across the state,” Westheimer said. “Your commitment is commendable, given your involvement in leadership roles within the legal profession and service roles within the medical community. This award undoubtedly highlights your exceptional contributions and positive impact.”

The G. Kirk Haas award was established in 1998 by former Bar President Edward Blumberg to recognize a Florida Bar member for his or her meritorious service to the profession.
