veteransMore than 60 veterans registered for the first Veterans Financial Literacy Project, held October 20 in South Florida and which organizers said would provide a blueprint for duplicating the program across the state.

The virtual program was organized by Broward Legal Aid, Legal Services of Greater Miami, and Mission United of Broward and Miami-Dade counties, with the Business Law Section providing volunteer attorneys for one-on-one sessions with veterans.

“The launch of the Veterans Financial Literacy Project was a huge success because we had the support of community partners like Mission United,” said Jayme Cassidy, chief diversity officer and pro bono advocacy director for LSGM. “The Business Law Section’s pro bono attorneys really came through and delivered a message to veteran clients that they are here to provide financial literacy legal assistance. This initial launch laid the groundwork for a statewide Veterans Financial Literacy Project.”

“The Business Law Section made a strong showing for this event with the great number of volunteer attorneys that showed up to make it all happen,” said Carlos Sardi, who helped recruit volunteers for the program.

The program began with welcoming remarks from U.S. Southern District Bankruptcy Chief Judge Laurel Isicoff. That was followed by a panel discussion by Isicoff, James Moon, and Sardi on personal finances, debt, credit scores, student loans, debt collection, and rights against abusive collection practices under state and federal laws.

The session included a video greeting from Brig. Gen. Charles Walker, a bankruptcy judge in the Middle District of Tennessee.

Following the panel discussion, volunteer lawyers met one-on-one, via video links, with veterans. The volunteers were recruited by the Business Law Section.
