Essay Winners Recognized in Sarasota
The annual Sarasota County Bar Association Council for Diversity and Inclusion essay writing contest for high school students honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This year the essay question related to the 19th Amendment and the conflict with the movement for the rights of African-Americans during the same period. Students were asked to discuss the cause of the conflict and what lessons can be learned from it.
The winners were announced during the MLK Celebration at Booker High School in Sarasota on Jan. 19. First place ($500 prize): Darriel Brookins, Booker High School; Second place ($250 prize): Jaela Nixon, Sarasota Military Academy; and Third place ($100 prize): Anjali Byju, Pine View School.
